The country size is 582,650 and is bordered by Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan Tanzania, Uganda. Most Kenyans live in the highlands including, main cities and towns. Nairobi, is the capital centre and stands at an altitude of 1,700 meters (5,500 feet). Even though Nairobi is near the Equator, its high elevation brings cooler air. To the west of Nairobi the land descends to the north-south running through the Great Rift Valley--the valley floor is at its lowest near Lake Turkana further in the deserts of northern Kenya. Around Lake Turkana, scientists have discovered some of humankind's earliest ancestors--a fossil known as Kenya Man, that was dated at 3.5 to 3.2 million years old. ii. The People and Culture Kenya is host to Forty ethnic groups, including Kikuyu farmers and Maasai cattle herders, three-quarters of Kenya's people is also located in the country side. The total population stands at 33,830,000 with 2,818,000 staying in the capital city Kenya is a diverse country, with many different cultures represented. Today, the Massai culture is the best known, due to its heavy exposure from tourism. Kenya's culture is both varied and fragmented. Nowhere else in Africa is there such a large number of ancient cultures, all alive and well in no hurry to change. Each cultural / ethnic group have their unique traditional arts & crafts, architecture in homestead designs, clothing and jewellery, food, social and economic activities etc. Kenya is bestowed with well over 40 different ethnic groups with different languages and dialects, customs, beliefs and lifestyles. Unique of all tribes is the Elmolo, Kenya's smallest group which is a surviving tribe just emerging from the stone age standard of living usually described as the race that has stood the test of time. iib. The Maasai warrior people: The well known Maasai too, famous for their warriorship, have a strong practical lifestyle which is basically seen to represent Kenya's traditions by foreigners. The Maasai land incorporates many of the National Parks like Amboseli, Mara, Tsavo and Nairobi National Park is now involved in the wildlife conservation projects to encourage eco-tourism. This enables the Maasai tribe to make a living from conservation and is an important factor in the preservation of wildlife habitats outside the Parks. Visitors can experience a unique holiday learning about their culture, wildlife and ecosystem of this fascinating tribal people. Another spectacular culture is the Swahili, an urban culture along the East African coast. The Swahili do not form an ethnic unit, however, since the population of the coastal region comprises Bantu, Arab, Persian, Indian and Indonesian peoples who all speak their language "Swahili", a Bantu language. Lamu is one of the last viable remnants of the Swahili civilization, which was the dominant cultural force all along the Kenyan coast. It is a place of fantasy, wrapped in a clock of medieval romance known as the "Kathmandu" of Africa. iii. Climate: Kenya enjoys a tropical climate. It is hot and humid at the coast, temperate inland and very dry in the north and northeast parts of the country. The country receives a great deal of sunshine all the year round and summer clothes are worn throughout the year.
The terrain is low plains rising to the central highlands bisected by Great Rift Valley; fertile plateau in west. The Kenyan Highlands comprise one of the most successful agricultural production regions in Africa; glaciers on Mt. Kenya; unique physiography supports abundant and varied wildlife of scientific and economic value.

iv. The teaming Wildlife Kenya has considerable land area of wildlife habitat, including much of the Serengeti plains, where Wildebeest and other bovids participate in a large scale annual migration. Up to 250,000 Wildebeest perish each year in the long and arduous movement to find forage in the dry season. The annual migration occurs between June and September with millions of wildlife taking part. It has been a popular event for filmmakers to capture. The "Big Five" animals of Africa can also be found in Kenya and these include the Lion, the Leopard, the Buffalo, the Rhino and the biggest of them all - the Elephant. A significant population of other wild animals, reptiles and birds can be found in the national parks and game reserves in the country. v. The cradle of mankind. Man was born on the eastern shores of Lake Rudolf, now Lake Turkana, according to recent fossil evidence, which makes Kenya the "Biblical Garden of Eden, from which descendants moved out to populate the world." A reverse migration began nine to ten thousand years ago when Kenya became the point of contact in Africa for the Stone Age and civilisation, spreading from the Mediterranean through to Southern Arabia. The National Museums of Kenya runs one National Museum in Nairobi and seven other regional museums elsewhere in the country enhancing Kenya's rich cultural heritage.

About the Author

Robert Muhoho is a travel consultant based in Kenya and a director of Landmark Safaris. While on a holiday in Tanzania it would be a sin to miss out on the breathtaking natural beauty and the awesome game viewing of the Serengeti.

The Magical Plains of the Serengeti
"We walked for miles over burnt out country... Then I saw the green trees of the river, walked two miles more and found myself in paradise." Stewart Edward White when he came upon the Serengeti in 1913.
To the Masaai who roamed this gorgeous place it was known as the Siringitu - "the place where the land moves on forever." Anyone visiting the Serengeti will be awestruck by the sheer expanse of the area. Stand still, appreciate the finest qualities of nature and loose yourself in this East African paradise.

The Serengeti region encompasses various National Parks and Game reserves in Tanzania including the Serengeti National Park, Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo, Grumeti and Ikorongo Controlled Areas the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.
The Serengeti stretches on for 30,000 km² region and is one of the earth's oldest ecosystems. Made up of wide open grassy plains, savannah, wooded grassland black clay plains, rivers, lakes and swamps the Serengeti is a diverse and magnificent region. The unique combination of habitats and ecosystems enables the area to support large numbers of different animal and bird species.

The Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti National Park is the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world. With the greatest concentration of plain game in the world, the Serengeti National Park has become a favourite amongst safari enthusiast's world wide. Once you have visited the mystical place you will know why.
On a safari in the Serengeti National Park you will see wildebeest, zebra, impala, warthog, gazelle, hyena, lion, leopard, cheetah ,caracal and giraffe to mention but a few. The majestic black-maned lions of Seronera are one of the parks most glorious sights, once hunted and very nearly extinct they can now be seen in prides of up to 20 members.

The Serengeti Shall Not Die
It is not only safari seekers that travel to the Serengeti National Park, the area is an important centre of scientific research. The pioneering work of Dr. Bernhard Grizmek and his Michael concerning aerial surveys of wildlife resulted in the best-selling classic "Serengeti Shall Not Die". The Serengeti Research Institute, continues their work, and provides vital information on management and conservation of game parks ecology and ethnology.

It is only the rhinos which no longer roam these grassy plains after poaching eradicated them. Conservation efforts in the park have lead to the growth of the wildebeest and buffalo populations which in turn has benefited the predators - lion, cheetah, and hyena. Although conserving the Serengeti's delicate ecosystem is a priority; drought, disease and overgrazing are threats to the survival of this great African region. The Tanzanian government is taking every precaution to ensure the conservation of this amazing natural phenomenon for mankind to enjoy.

The Serengeti - A Year Round Destination

Visit between the months of December and March to revel in the glory of an African summer. The short, sporadic rains provide relief to the heat and the game viewing is superb.
During the rainy season, which lasts from April to June, there tend to be less travellers and the cost of an East African safari is cheaper. Don't be put off by this though as the game viewing opportunities are still excellent. The months from July to November are the busiest when in comes to travel in the Serengeti, safaris and tours get very busy very quickly so be sure to book in advance to spend your summer holidays exploring this magnificent area.

Undeniably one of the best times to visit the Serengeti is during the annual migration when thousands of wildebeest and zebra make their way from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. As predators follow the wildebeest and zebra closely a migration safari is an ideal opportunity to view lions and other big cats as well as these breathtaking herds. Although the exact timing of the migration changes with each passing year the best time to take in this magnificent phenomenon is between June and August. The herds then usually spend 2 months in the Masai Mara and then begin their long journey back to the glorious Serengeti.

About the Author

Explore the wonders of Tanzania and the spectacular Serengeti with Escape Tours. I met him in Northern Tanzania as several Pastors bickered at his fathers graveside as to who would actually conduct the service. Joshua's father was a nice man, he loved life and drink and women. He died very quickly from the HIV/Aids in a Tanzanian State Hospital. He was not particularly a religious man but occasionally visited several churches over the years. He was not big on commitment. Each Church now claimed this lifeless carcass as theirs to bury in the fertile Tanzania ground.

The one Pastor who could lay claim to this family's welfare kept quiet not wanting to shame himself nor the Tanzania church. It was the career pastors who bickered and whined. Life is hard in Tanzania and this was a chance for them to give a good sermon to a large audience.

I paid little attention, it was Tanzania's dry season. I looked for my friend from Southern Tanzania on the border of Zambia - Mama Lumuli - someone to speak to in English. All the Tanzania women were covered in their colorful Kangas; pulled up over their heads. The women were anonymous, a sea of colorful printed cotton. Maybe two hundred women - I would never find her.

So, my attention was drawn to the little boy, whose fathers body was now a point of depute. His mother was still young but poor. She was uneducated, had never held a job and was unemployable. She had six boys to worry about. The women grieved and mourned for the loss of the breadwinner. There is no social state in Tanzania. The father of Joshua maybe he was not a good father, but now he was gone; six boys to feed and school, the women wailed their grief.

Joshua looked up at me. He did not have an easy future ahead of him. His mother is resourceful though and she will have to be in order that her family survive.

There is a white teacher that comes sometimes from England. Usually around Easter he comes for a week maybe two. But he never notices this family and is more interested in the building rather than the community. Everyone posing for photographs and pretending always pretending.

The white uses his magic tricks, trickery, to entertain and to teach. The children love it the adults like it too. Although some think this is evil and believe the magic to be real. This man stays in my house. I speak English and have lived for some time in U.K. I also have two bathrooms with one of them having a sit down toilet. Usually we have the squat toilets, the Americans and the British do not like to squat they like to sit.

Once a white man brought some of his family. My house was very overcrowded. One night his daughter slept in the same room as her father. It was innocent, I made sure of that. But it shocked everyone in the community; shocked them to the very marrow of their bones. A grown man to sleep with his daughter is such a big shame. So very scandalous.

I am tired. I am more interested on how do I keep young Joshua fed and alive. No more children to die, this is what I want. My very good friend, his baby died last year because he didn't have US$50 to treat his daughter. When the white man from England found out he said he was very sorry. He was too. He liked my friends family.

I don't want this to happen again - a child to die for the want of a few dollars. I plan to leave this small town and move to the city. I have been offered a job in another place, away from my home but the money is good. So maybe I will be forced to move my lazy bones to this strange city. Don't get me wrong - I like the city - so it won't be a sacrifice - but I will miss the community.

About the Author

Tanzania information and Tanzania safaris and travel - for more information on the culture and travel in Tanzania see http://www.thejumapage.co.uk these interactive pages are for communal use. Far removed from the distractions of crowds and noise, a safari in Africa offers an adrenaline rush different from anything you have ever experienced.

In the Swahili language, the word "safari" means "trip" or "journey." Most of the time, it is used to describe an individual's or family's trip to visit distant relatives or friends. Non-Africans use the word safari to indicate a journey to Africa's game parks to view their magnificent wildlife.

Africa's Magnificent Game Parks ...

Africa is noted for its game parks. These parks are home to the largest concentrations of animals in the world. Your African safari will begin with a journey to one of these parks. Each park has its own unique characteristics, and your visit to any one of them will leave memories that last a lifetime.

Some of the more popular safari destinations include Masai Mara and Amboseli in Kenya, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, and the Kalahari Game Preserve and Chobe National Park in Botswana.

An Amazing Wildlife Spectacle ...

The world's most spectacular wildlife event takes place on the vast plains of east Africa. This event is the annual wildebeest migration. Each year, more than 1.4 million wildebeest make their journey from the vast Serengeti plains to the hills of Masai Mara. In addition, 200,000 zebra and gazelle accompany the wildebeest in their migration. These animals migrate in a clockwise direction covering over 1800 miles in their search for food and water. Africa's great predators relentlessly track these herds on their endless pilgrimage.

Sighting the "Big Five" ...

Quite often, visitors to Africa's game parks will spot each of the "Big Five" animals. These are the leopard, lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Big game hunters designated these animals as the "Big 5" because they are the most dangerous animals to hunt. In addition to these, you will see thousands of other animals including a variety of gazelle and antelope, hyena, giraffes, wart hog, and exotic bird life.

Many other options are available for your African Safari. Plan your safari now and have a memorable adventure with your family.

About the Author

Earl Calvert is a travel writer who's website, Family Vacations and Adventures, offers creative ideas for turning family vacations into family adventures. Also known as a gnu, the animal has a structure resembling a young horse with a heavily built frontal shoulders and chest and a slender posterior. Its legs are so slender it's intriguing how it supports the proportionately larger body frame. The 'clown' title results from its unusual behavior considered to other bovids, for example a gnu herd will usually scatter in different directions when attacked by a lion. This makes it easier for the predator to isolate and strike. Its disproportionate structure does not help it either, and resembles a misfire in creation. It has some blurry long fur that flows on its unusually large head, front shoulders and inwardly bent horns to boot.

The Migration

What gives the gnu its worldwide repute is not its body structure however, but the sheer numbers and spectre created by its migration. The animals migrate between the Serengeti and Mara Savannahs in Tanzania and Kenya respectively, in search of grass and water. It is estimated that over 1 million of these animals are on the move during the annual migration between June and October. The numbers are so high that miles upon miles of grassland is blanketed by a mass of moving gnu. They simply stretch from one horizon to the next; of the conveniently flat and treeless Maasai Mara Savannah. It is a sight to behold when on your wildlife safari. The wildebeest migration phenomenon is so huge that satellites miles away in space are able to capture the surge as a black moving mass on the plains of East Africa. Now, that's huge: and it's even more awesome watching it on the ground or with Mara balloon Safaris.

River Crossing

The most dramatic and memorable safari experience is when you observe the migrating wildebeest/gnus at the several Mara river crossings. Numbers upon numbers gather at such crossings unsure of their next move. The crossings are such notorious spots that the gnus have developed a self preservation instinct over time. Wildebeests will amass in their thousands at banks of river Mara which is rife with the dreaded Nile crocodile and raging currents. Put in the swift current, eminent stampedes and jaw snapping crocodiles in this picture and you get a guaranteed recipe for mass genocide at such river crossings. The Maasai Mara River is usually awash with bloated mass of wildebeest carcass that crocodiles feast on for days on end.

Over 250,000 of the wildebeest die from drowning, stampede, crocodiles and the predators every year. But even this annual carnage is not enough to reduce their numbers. The wildebeest deaths during migration are replenished by the over 400,000 births a year. The deaths during migration are now considered as a natural population check; natural selection at its best.

Do and Die Point

River crossings in the Mara are favourite vantage points to observe the Mara wildebeest migration on your Kenyan safari. The animals will gather hesitantly in huge numbers on the banks, unsure of when to take the plunge. The other wildebeests behind the frontline keep amassing into hundreds of thousands until the pressure on the front is too much to bear.

They finally take the leap; and when they do, even the waiting crocodiles scatter to the flanks. The fear of being trampled by the millions of wildebeest is too real for even a crocodile to risk a head-on affront. Hundreds upon hundreds make death-daring- high leaps into the water, that the splash makes a swash like a million water falls.

The Wildebeest Predators.

Wildebeest Migration is such that a smattering population of other bovids, join in the migration including Zebras and Gazelles. Lion prides also escort (as they eat some, of course) and welcome the migrating wildebeest on either side of the Mara River Crossings. The lions stark up their stomachs with gnu carcass to a point, the prey subdues the prides in the plains with little fear. As long as a lion has had his 35 odd kilos of meat a day, he poses no threat. "All that is needed is to sacrifice a cousin here, a distant aunt there and we are fine." It's surely a game of numbers. Leopards on other hand, don't have to move far to hunt its prey. All they'll do is pounce on unsuspecting wildebeest as they pass by their (leopards) tree parches. The rest scatter as usual in different directions. "It's just another sacrifice after all; we still got the numbers... no matter what. This is one of the most elusive picture-perfect moments when you are on your African Wildlife Safari.

Visiting the Mara.

It's not only the carnivores that will escort migrating wildebeests but humans as well. The Maasai Mara attracts such interest that the ensuring demand during the months of June-October cannot be met. You will find it difficult to get a space in the lodges if you do not book in advance. Your accommodation in the Mara ranges from 4star to 5star deluxe lodges, tented camps and simple camping tents. You will need to do advance booking however; at least 3months will guarantee you a placement. Sometime, afew beds may be available for you on short notice, but this is unbankable. The wildebeest Migration takes place everyday of the 4(July-October) month duration. You are as such guaranteed a sighting irrespective of which month of the 4 you visit. Your bookings are handled by several very professional companies which also provide transportation and transfers from airports, self drive car hire and accommodation in the Mara. Make sure you see the migration the next time you make a Kenyan wildlife safari.

Among other safaris offered in Kenya include Beach safari and venture safaris, culture safari charity missions, nature safari wildlife safaris balloon safaris. Do you know it is? Arusha National Park is only a few Kilometers from Arusha and is a small but beautiful park set in the shadow of Mount Meru in Tanzania. There is a sting of lakes in this park and canoeing has recently been added to the tourist activities in this park.

One lake known as 'Small Momela' successful launched the canoeing safari this year. This is a great way to see the park from a new perspective. It is good to get out of your vehicle and actually get some exercise and get 'down and personal' with the African Bush. This chance to view the animals in their natural habitat should not be passed by.

The Tanzania Government have handed the operation of this canoeing safari to an Arusha based company called Green Footprints Adventure. These canoes can be booked direct or though your operator, or even you driver/guide will be able to organize this mini-adventure for you. From the lake you are able to get a closer look at hippos and the amazing bird life that normally would go unnoticed from your safari vehicle.

Even though this park is very accessible the parks authority claim only 7,000 visitors in 1995 this has dramatically increased to an expected 50,000 for this year. Lying between the peaks of Kilimanjaro and Meru, Arusha National Park is outstandingly beautiful, with a wide range of habitats, form a string of crater lakes where many water birds can be watched through the highland mountain forest to the imposing summit of Mount Meru at 4,500 meters above sea level.

The forest contains a wealth of birds and other animals like the bushbuck which are easily glimpsed between ancient cedar trees or the striking black and white colobus monkeys climbing along their branches. The interesting geology of the area is reflected in the impressive view of the ash cone and cliff face leading to the summit of Mount Meru.

Those who ascend the summit of the mountain are rewarded with unparalleled views of the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Rift Valleys. It would be a most exciting holiday to go to this most underrated park as it is very accessible to any itinerary based in the north of Tanzania and you will be continually amazed at what you see.

Author: Jenny Gill is an international author with vast experience in a diverse range of subjects, for more information visit www.canoeingsyte.com

Africa Has A Wealth Of Safari Vacation Choices by Chris Snow

Taking a safari vacation is one of the most exotic options available. Deep in the heart of Africa is Tanzania, with the great Serengeti plains extending into the distance as far as you can see. Herds of animals run free here in an untamed wilderness. Predators still hunt for prey here. The Serengeti name comes from the Maasai word meaning 'the place where the land runs on forever'. This flat and grassy plan that makes up about one-third of the park, together with the savannahs, is packed with game.

One of the most famous events that occur on the Serengeti is the wildebeest migration. Every year, about two million animals move around the 14,764-square kilometer ecosystem in a clockwise direction, looking for good grazing land and water. These animals are closely followed by predators.

You can spend your time among lions, elephants, cheetahs, impala, hyena, and warthogs. You can sit at a campfire under the African sky, which is home to millions of stars. You can experience the unchanged Africa, exploring historic and exotic places. You will see amazing sunsets and landscape and be hosted by open-hearted people.

When you go to Kenya you can begin your own adventures by traveling as an observer or participating in the many opportunities to see exotic wildlife and natural wonders. You can explore archaeological sites and antiquities. There are also many calm waterways and architectural marvels to be seen and experienced.

Some have described Kenya as having everything that is beautiful in Africa. It has rolling savannahs, icy peaks on Mount Kenya, and the white coral beaches of the Indian Ocean. There are holidays of all types, such as camel safaris in Samburu land. You can participate in walking safaris for bird-watching or go golfing and fishing. You may choose to visit Maasai Mara, where thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate in July and August. This is an exciting sight for visitors. The coast of Kenya provides many attractions, and Lamu Island has white sand beaches with archaeological sites providing a view into pre-colonial African history. Malindi offers good fishing, surfing, and snorkeling.

Just because you are on safari doesn't mean you'll have to stay in canvas tents. There are also numerous hotels, game lodges, tree hotels, and self-catering chalets. All of these venues offer rest rooms, clean beds, and fine dining. There are good modern roads that connect one exciting location to another and most parks and reserves are easily accessed, so you can see big game.

You can hire cars, motor coaches, and luxury minibuses for transportation, as well as air services with sophisticated charter networks. One of the best journeys runs from Nairobi to Mombasa.

East Africa is a great place to visit all year long. Each season has its own charm, and each area offers wonderful moments. Visit your travel agent to design a trip suitable for you and to get the best deals on airfare, accommodations, tour guides, transportation, and more.

About the Author

Discover more articles about vacation and travel ideas by visiting http://vacation-secrets.com

Top 10 Attractions In Africa by Francois L. THE VICTORIA FALLS - ZIMBABWE

From either Zimbabwe or Zambia you can experience the world's largest sheet of falling water. The spray can be seen up to 30 kilometres away - hence the local name 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' - "The smoke that thunders".

Apart from the spectacular views including permanent rainbows arcing across the face of the falls, one can experience the waters along the river at closer quarters with white water rafting.

9. LAKE MALAWI

The 3rd largest lake in Africa is a tropical paradise. The tranquil waters lap against shores lined with palm, mango, banana and avocado trees. Here you can kayak, while snorkeling offers access to the colourful kaleidoscope of endemic cichlids found at this UNESCO world heritage site.

10. TABLE MOUNTAIN - SOUTH AFRICA

This iconic landmark stands in the centre of the beautiful city of Cape Town.

Climb, or experience the wonders of the revolving cable car. Either way a visit to one of the most recognizable mountains in the world is a must for your trip around the great African continent. And while you're there, enjoy the wonders of Cape Town -beaches, winelands, Robben Island - each one a 'Top 10' in its own right!

About the Author

Francois Botha is the developer of Akuko, a blog covering South Africa, travel, news, Cape Town and everything interesting. Other Africa Books - Fiction

There are some Africa fiction books that manage to capture and communicate a measure of the magic, romance, wildness and unique character of the dark continent.

Reading these books will give you a foretaste of what it is about Africa that seems to get into peoples blood and engender a love of the place that draws them back again and again.

Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Cape Town written by Paul Theroux is a magnificent takes readers the length of Africa by rattletrap bus, dugout canoe, cattle truck, armed convoy, ferry, and train. In the course of his epic and enlightening journey, he endures danger, delay, and dismaying circumstances. Gauging the state of affairs, he talks to Africans, aid workers, missionaries, and tourists. What results is an insightful meditation on the history, politics, and beauty of Africa and its people.

I Dreamed of Africa is Kuki Gallmans classic inspirational and moving book about her experiences in Kenya after she moved there permanently from Italy. Safaris help to fund projects to rehabilitate these children. Ensure the company you choose for a safari in Tanzania help with community projects. Make tourism responsible.

Stambuli grew up on the streets of Arusha in northern Tanzania. From the age of eight he smoked marijuana and drank home brewed alcohol. To survive he became a thief, stealing papaya from neighbours trees when he was hungry; as he grew he moved on to stealing bicycles and even the odd spot of prostitution to get a good meal and a dry roof over his head for the night. When he had money he would play cards and gamble down by the village stream, and together with friends smoke and drink until the money was gone.

When money was needed again he would walk into town and steal a bicycle and as he got older and became a strong 15 year old standing 6 feeg1inch in his bare feet he became more adept and intimidating with his thievery. Eventually, at the age of 16 he began to work mornings at the bus terminal offering to carry bags and earn a few shillings for himself. He would sit in the dust at the side of the road, waiting with the other boys for the next bust to arrive; because of his size and growing up on the streets he managed to push his way to the front of the competition and get work.

Stambuli's father had abandoned him whilst he was still in his mother womb. Stambuli would talk affectionately of his father who lived by the coast close to Tanga Bay. He had never seen his father but told his friends 'one day I will travel and meet my father'.

Not all the money would go on drugs and booze. He would give to his mother who was a widow and was raising her granddaughter, Grace. Graces father was Stambuli's brother. Graces father was a small time drug dealer. He had murdered a man and regularly beat his wife. This man was the main male role model in Stambuli's life.

Stambuli's brother was eventually arrested for the murder and put in prison. After a year in prison he committed suicide. Stambuli would visit his brother every week and remembers the day he arrived to be told his brother was dead and then given his brothers body. Grace the child to the marriage was then abandoned as the mother fled to Dar es Salaam.

Stambuli was left the contents of his brother's house but he was not allowed to keep them. Elders of the village deemed Stambuli unfit to have anything of his own and they took the belongings from the house for themselves. All was taken from the house except for Grace; Stambuli took Grace to his Mother and she cared for the child and Stambuli went to work at the bus Station to earn money for food. There was no room for Stambuli and he would sleep next to the river or occasionally at a friend's house.

On his seventeenth birthday disaster struck. Whilst at work at the busy bus terminal someone accused Stambuli of taking a passengers bag from a bus. He was arrested and sentenced to four months imprisonment.

Stambuli's greatest fear was to go to prison where his brother had died.

As he started his sentence in the nearby prison he realised how alone he was. Abandoned by his friends his Mother visited him every two days. These visits were distressing for his mother plus as she couldn't afford to take the bus; she must walk the eight miles every day. Stambuli told her, on her second visit, to please not visit and to save her money and strength to grow and sell spinach and to look after Grace.

Prison life is not easy in East Africa and here in this place Stambuli would reflect and face the future. The rest of this storey is told in the next article Stambuli's Storey.

About the Author

Community and cultural news and travel can be seen at http://betheladventure.co.uk and Information on Tanzania and Community projects can be sourced at http://www.tanzania-info.co.uk - change peoples lives and choose to support responsible tourism.

Lake Victoria the Beaches and the Culture

After a long hard day being a tourist, after driving and walking in the hot equatorial sun head back to the hotel. What is needed to finish the day off and relax is not to sit in the hotel for your dinner, however nice the food and surrounding. You are on Safari and have probably traveled long and hard to get to see Africa proper. No; the hotel/lodge restaurant will just no do! Head to the beach in front of the hotel and relax on the sands of Lake Victoria and listening to traditional African music. Chefs from the hotel will cook on the beach whilst you relax and drink in the magic of this region.

A leisurely dinner stretching into the evening as the warm waters of the lake and the balmy African evening along with the traditional music will seduce you into loving Africa; life will never be the same; you have been warned.

This region of Tanzania has a rich culture, if you are lucky the young people of the area will come down to the beach to dance to the music. In Africa it is not the beat but the rhythms of the music that is important. A word of warning do not be tempted to attend any of the tired performances created for the tourists, but choose a place on the beach that the locals visit. If you want safe and neatly choreographed then I would surest Disney World as the better option. And if you feel the urge join in with the dancing. It is unforgettable.

If later in the evening the mellow story telling around a campfire and gazing at the night sky and stars of the Equator is just to boring for you - then "Bukoba Beach" is a great place to go and there are many discotheques in Bukoba town centre.

Cultural tours are a must whilst in Tanzania and by far the best way to do this is to discover the local culture on foot or by bicycle. This is a chance to get in contact with the local people in their daily life - don't miss it. A tour operator will gladly hire out an experienced English-speaking guide to bring Bukoba to life. You can set the pace and set the distance, physical exertion and amount of cultural enrichment you are able to assimilate in a day! The secret is don't try to do too much, the less you do the more enriching the experience.

Go fishing with Local fishermen. How more cultural can you get? Experience the local life of fishermen by joining them in their work; fishing. Maybe go out in a small wooden canoe and try to see who can catch the most Tilapia or Nile perch. At the end of the day someone can prepare your catch and cook your days spoils; nothing better than to eat fresh fish on the beach you have caught yourself. An organized trip will cost about US$15 - and if your fisherman is good - slip him a couple dollars tip.

Possibly the area's [not so best-kept] secrets is the caveman rock paintings close to Bukoba town plus one of the first religious shrines built in East Africa [as with all tourist information take all statistics with a pinch of salt. L.A.V.I.B.O.G.A.M. is the Lake Victoria Botanical Garden of Medicinal Plants. This place is a fabulous project to preserve and protect the traditional plant life and their use within the region.

Karobela or Kabaranda Beach - take a hike along this remote area to experience culture and panoramas. Pass through banana plantations, forest and wild ending up at a spectacular viewpoint; looking across Lake Victoria. Then, with your guide leading the way, climb down to a fantastic secluded beach. Rest here and watch the birds or the local fisher folk perform their daily activities. If arrangements are made in advance join them in and try to catch your supper.

About the Author

See the Tanzania information page at http://www.tanzania-info.co.uk or for more specialized safari information see http://www.betheladventure.co.uk use responsible tourism to change lives.

How to travel to Bukoba From Within East Africa

Bukoba is fast becoming an area of Tanzania to visit; however it is easier to access from Uganda and Kenya than it is from Arusha or Dar es Salaam. Below are a few options for travel to this area from within East Africa.

If you travel from Uganda and land at Entebbe airport (EBB) then travel the short distance to Kampala, where you can get a bus to Bukoba; this journey takes about 5-6 hours. Dolphin Bus Company has a bus to Bukoba every day and the ticket should cost less than US$10 per person.

You can also travel trough Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar or Nairobi. Fly to Mwanza with Precision Air or Costal Aviation - the flights leave at noon and it is about a three hour flight and then get a connecting flight to Bukoba. From Dar es Salaam there are four flights everyday to and from Mwanza. Bukoba airport is on Aerodrome Road near the lake. However, be warned that the cost will be well in excess of US$200 per person from Dar to Bukoba.

Precision air agent office in Bukoba: Ms. Rose Kajilita, Tel: +255 28 2220545 E-mail: bkmachinery@twiga.com

Precision air office in Dar es Salaam: Tel: +255 22 2130800 Fax: +255 22 2113036 E-mail: information@precisionairtz.com Website: www.precisionairtz.com

There are two boats between Mwanza and Bukoba. The night ferry and the fastboat.
